Origins of the Rogers Rankings System

The Rogers Rankings are the direct outcome of more than three years of meetings and research of both national and international best practices. The goal was to develop a well-organized and accurate ranking and events management structure to help promote competition at all levels. The Rogers Rankings are based on the innovative and proven Chess Elo ranking system. This head-to-head system was initially the only system that emphasized the value of a player’s win over the value of the tournament, which can sometimes be extremely difficult to establish. The foundation of the Elo ranking system is based on the system’s ability to accurately evaluate the calibre of a player. The Quebec Tennis Federation has been using the Elo framework with exceptional ranking accuracy since 1982.
Tennis Canada and all Provincial Tennis Associations will work from a common database called the Baseline management system to run events and store results. The Baseline management system was created and developed by Computan, a tennis savvy software organization that has been working with many Provincial Tennis Associations for years. The system has the built-in functionalities of the Elo ranking system and is extremely beneficial as it will allow Tennis Canada and all of the provinces to integrate schedules, events, track players, manage results and run rankings.
