Five Canadians Reach Tournament Finals

October 17, 2009

Five Canadians will be playing for some well-deserved hardware on Sunday at various tournaments throughout North America.

At the $50,000 Price Chopper Women’s Challenger in Kansas City Missouri, Valérie Tétreault (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) will attempt to win her fourth title of the season when she goes up against fifth-seeded Russian Regina Kulikova in the singles final. Tétreault, seeded fourth in the tournament, upset top-seeded Edina Gallovits of Romania, ranked No. 93 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in Saturday’s semifinals. Meanwhile, Kulikova eliminated Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 to earn a berth in the championship match.

At the Pan American Closed Championships, a Grade B1 ITF junior event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC) and Katarena Paliivets (Richmond Hill, ON) will face off in a compelling all-Canadian girls singles final. In the round of four, eighth-seeded Bouchard defeated fifth-seeded Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 while Paliivets, seeded fourth, easily disposed of seventh-seeded American Ester Goldfeld 6-0, 6-1.

A second all-Canadian final will be contested at the ITF World Ranking event in Burlington, Ontario as National Training Centre member David Vieyra (Mississauga, ON) will go up against compatriot  Soufiane Azargui in the boys singles title bout.
