Aleksandra Wozniak’s (Blainville, QC) day on court lasted just thirty minutes Tuesday in her opening round match at the $1 million Kremlin Cup, a Premier indoor event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour being contested in Moscow, Russia.
The 22-year-old Canadian, ranked No. 31 in the world, advanced to the second round when her opponent, World no. 49 Sara Errani of Italy was forced to retire with injury at the start of the second set. Wozniak was dominant en route to a 6-1 opening set win, giving Errani just 12 points in the set and losing a mere six points in her four service games.
In Thursday’s Round of 16, Wozniak will take on the winner of the first round title between Russian Maria Kirilenko, ranked No. 61 in the world, and the tournament’s third seed, World No. 10 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland. Wozniak and Radwanska have met twice this season and the talented Pole has won both matches in straight sets. Meanwhile, Wozniak and Kirilenko have never faced each other before.
Polansky starts off on the right foot in Chile Peter Polansky (Thornhill, ON) is continuing his South American clay court stint this week at the $100,000 Copa Petrobas Challenger in Santiago, Chile. The 21-year-old advanced to the second round in singles and doubles on Monday thanks to a pair of straight set victories. In singles, Polansky dropped Argentine Diego Alvarez (No. 289) 6-1, 6-4 and will go up against another Argentine in seventh-seeded Sergio Roitman (No. 133) in round two. In doubles, Polansky and his American partner Alex Bogomolov Jr. scored a 6-3, 7-6(1) win over the Brazilian duo of Ricardo Hocevar and Joao Souza. They will play the fourth-seeded team of Alvarez and Sebastian Decoud in the quarter-finals.
