Wozniak Prepares for Final Tournament of 2009 in Moscow

Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) is in Moscow, Russia this week to contest her final tournament of a successful 2009 season at the $1 million Kremlin Cup, a Premier indoor event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.  

The 22-year-old Canadian, ranked No. 31 in the world, will begin her title bid on Tuesday when she goes up against World No. 49 Sara Errani of Italy in opening round action. The two players met earlier this year on clay in Rome and it was Wozniak who came away with a hard fought three-set victory.    

Wozniak arrives in Moscow with some solid results under her belt in recent weeks. After reaching the third round at consecutive Premier mandatory tournaments in Tokyo and Beijing, she was a quarter-finalist at last week’s HP Open in Osaka, Japan where she fell to her arch-nemesis Caroline Wozniacki for the fourth time this season. Wozniak will face a tough field this week that includes three Top 10 players as the world’s best battle it out for the final spot at the prestigious season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha. Tétreault falls in Kansas City final
Valérie Tétreault (St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC) came up just short in her bid for a fourth ITF Pro Circuit title in 2009, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Russian Regina Kulikova in Sunday’s singles final at the $50,000 Price Chopper Women’s Challenger in Kansas City, Missouri. Tétreault upset top-seeded Edina Gallovits of Romania, ranked No. 89 in the world, in the semifinals. Her run to the final has allowed her to hit a new career-high ranking of No. 124.
