Wozniak and Fichman Eliminated from Doubles Contention
January 21, 2010
Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) and Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON) both came up short in their firt round doubles matches on Thursday at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
Wozniak was unable to redeem herself after a tough opening round loss against World No. 4 Caroline Wozniacki in singles, falling 7-5, 6-2 to Elena Baltacha and Liga Dekmeijere alongside partner Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic. Teaming up with France’s Alize Cornet, Fichman dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to the ninth-seeded pair of Elena Vesnina and Jie Zheng in the first Grand Slam doubles match of her professional career.
This means that hope for Canadian doubles glory rests on the shoulders of Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON) and Marie-Ève Pelletier (Repentigny, QC) who have both reached the second round of their respective draws. Both players will be back in action on Friday Down Under.
