Victories All Around for Canada at World Team Cup

The Canadian men’s singles team continued their strong play in advancing to the semifinals of World Group 2 at the Invacare World Team Cup in Stockholm, Sweden on Tuesday.

 

The Canuck squad defeated Israel 2-1 thanks to triumphs in the opening singles match and doubles. Lee Carter was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Asaraf Stocol, and then teamed up with Yann Mathieu to upend the team of Avi Weinberg and Meir Cohen 6-2, 6-2 to earn the winning point. Canada earned its quarter-final spot against Israel after taking out Greece 3-0 in the opening round on Monday.

 

Canada’s women’s singles team was also victorious 3-0 over Brazil on Tuesday. Quebecers Helene Simard and Annie Morissette put on impressive performances in both singles and doubles to propel Canada into the final eight where they will take on either Sweden or France on Wednesday.

 

Meanwhile, Adrian Dieleman and Sarah Hunter, the Canadian competitors in the quad division were not as fortunate as their compatriots, falling 3-0 at the hands of a talented squad from the Netherlands. Canada will now be entered in the consolation where they will attempt to improve their No. 7 seeding for next year’s edition of the Invacare World Team Cup.

 

All three Canadian teams will be back in action on Wednesday.
