Canada Victorious at World Team Cup
July 29, 2009
Canada’s quad and women’s teams beat their opponents and the weather on a rainy Thursday at the Invacare World Team Cup in Nottingham, England.
The quad team swept their best-of-three tie against Japan and will face Italy on Friday in a battle for fifth place. Sarah Hunter (White Rock, British Columbia) and Gary Luker (Stoney Creek, Ontario) each won their singles matches in convincing fashion and Hunter teamed up with Adrian Dieleman (Ancaster Ontario) to win in doubles. Thanks to the triumph over Japan, Canada is assured of remaining in Group 1 for the 2010 edition of the World Team Cup.
The women’s squad was equally impressive against Denmark with Yuka Chokyu (Vancouver) and Cindy McLean (Guelph, Ontario) claiming victory in their singles matches by identical 6-0, 6-3 scores and will continue their trek in the 9-16 playoffs against Belgium on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Canadian men’s team will battle Israel on Thursday in the quarter-finals of World Group II.
